10 things you probably didn't know about blood

10 things you probably didn't know about blood
It contains gold and life-saving substances. And while some animals like to feast on it, it can be very toxic to humans. These are 10 surprising facts about blood

1. There is gold in your blood
The body contains about 0.2 milligrams of gold - the majority of which is in your blood. Just count quickly: so to make a gold ring of 8 grams, you have to drain the blood of 40,000 people.

2. Coconut water can replace blood.
Coconut water has been declared a health drink by several dieticians because of its nutritious sugars and salts. A 1999 experiment demonstrated that coconut water can replace blood plasma if a doctor can get coconuts in an emergency, but not blood - which hopefully is rare.

3. You consist of 8% blood In the journal American Society of Hematology, researchers calculated that blood makes up about 8 percent of body weight. An adult man weighing 60 to 90 kilos therefore has 5 to 7 liters of blood.
4. Countess would bathe in blood.
Commons Hungarian countess Elisabeth Báthory was one of the worst serial killers in history. She lived in the 16th century and possibly killed as many as 650 people - most of whom were tortured to death. The countess is also said to have bathed in the blood of her victims and even drank it to remain young. It is not known whether she actually drank blood. Many historians consider this story a fabrication.

 5. Blood donors give 10% of their blood.
When you give blood, usually half a liter is taken. If you have 5 liters of blood in your body, that is 10 percent. Your bone marrow can directly produce 2 to 17 million new red blood cells as needed. The production of new white blood cells and platelets takes a little more time, but after a few days all the blood taken is replaced.
6. Vampires are sick with blood.
Are you considering a career as a vampire? Read this first. Blood is rich in iron, but the body cannot excrete it well in large amounts. An iron overdose causes abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and constipation and, in the worst case, leads to death. More than 30 to 60 milligrams of iron per pound of body weight per day can be dangerous. Blood contains about 0.5 milligrams of iron per milliliter. So a 60-pound woman must drink 5 to 7 liters of blood a day to be poisoned. Unlike humans, animals that drink blood, such as bats, have developed a special way to excrete excess iron. The blood runs through a mucous membrane in the intestines, which acts as a filter and prevents the iron from being absorbed into the bloodstream.

7. Man's blood saves 2 million babies.
The blood of James Harrison, now 79, contains the rare Rho (D) immunoglobulin. Rho (D) prevents the body from making antibodies and thus attacking another blood type. Therefore, Harrison's blood can be used, among other things, to treat rhesus antagonism, a condition in which pregnant women's immune systems attack the baby's red blood cells. Harrison has given blood 1,000 times over the course of his life and saved approximately 2 million lives.

8. Pregnant woman has 50% more blood.
During pregnancy, the amount of blood increases by 50 percent. This ensures that there is enough blood for the uterus and the placenta.

 9. Cows have 800 kinds of blood Humans have a total of eight different blood types: A, B, AB and 0, each of which can be rhesus positive or rhesus negative. Cats only have three blood types, while cows boast hundreds of blood types - probably at least 800.
10. Horseshoe crab blood is worth its weight in gold.
Not all blood is red. For example, the horseshoe crab literally has blue blood, because the molecules that transport oxygen in this animal are based on copper instead of iron. Contrary to the name, the horseshoe crab is not a lobster-like. It belongs to the arthropods and is related to spiders and scorpions. Researchers have discovered that the horseshoe crab's blue blood can detect the presence of bacteria in medicines by clumping. That makes this blood particularly valuable for the pharmaceutical industry, and the price is therefore more than 13,000 euros per liter.
