Top 5 facts about the clothing industry.
In addition to food, drink and shelter, clothing is one of the four major primary biological needs of humans. After the many food scandals and the rise of the food gurus, more and more people are interested in the origin of their food. But what about clothes? Something often goes wrong in that too, as these 5 revealing facts about the clothing industry show. 5 not so nice facts about the fashion world
1. Clothing from Europe is more expensive than from Asian countries. The difference is mainly in the costs per employee. A German worker in the clothing industry is the most expensive; it costs about $ 40 an hour. However, a Filipino employee costs only 88 cents an hour.
2. Globally, in 2010, no less than $ 2.560 trillion was spent in the apparel industry. In the same year, the market share of garments made from organic cotton was $ 5 billion. That is about 0.01% of the whole.
3. Much of the clothes we buy are never worn. British closets alone are worth over $ 45 billion worth of clothes that have never been worn. Ultimately, about 10% of these clothes disappear into the trash unworn.
4. If you want to buy sustainable clothing, you cannot rely solely on the label. Many chains enter into agreements with factories after it has been found that they meet all requirements and, for example, do not use child labor. However, these factories also regularly outsource their work to other factories that do not meet the requirements at all.
5. In China there are several rivers with the season's fashion colors. This is because it takes about 2 tons of water to dye a ton of fabric. That water, 2.5 billion tons annually, is discharged back into rivers.
